As part of our #allgirls campaign, we’re profiling a boss chick from the boohoo group each week. This time, it’s Nasty Gal’s Editorial Director, Tiyana Grulovic.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER?
Probably something between a professional hamburger taster and the very vague profession of working “in fashion,” whatever that meant to a scrappy Canadian immigrant at the time. Luckily I ended up with a bit of both?
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR JOB?
I paid my dues. I started out reporting on the fashion industry, covering all the international fashion weeks and interviewing designers at a national newspaper in Canada. Then I worked with celebrities and produced covers, styled cover stories and edited the fashion section of a major Canadian magazine in Toronto. After that, I became the fashion director of one of Canada’s biggest retailers where I worked on seasonal campaigns, overhauling their eCommerce, and working with the design teams to bring their creative visions to life.
Landing at Nasty Gal was such a dream, because it combines by passions for music, personal style, storytelling and creating compelling content with really great clothes for cool girls who can actually afford them!
WHO INSPIRES YOU ON THE DAILY?
My team! I’m lucky to work with such an insanely talented group of passionate people, with whom I can be creative, collaborative and just really fucking silly.
I’M RESPONSIBLE FOR…
I’m essentially the voice of the brand. I oversee all the marketing copy, product copy, edit and curate the blog and oversee all social content and channels. The job is only as good as my team and they’re pretty much the best I’ve ever worked with.
THE BEST THING ABOUT MY JOB IS…
Is it super cliched to say that no day is the same? It really isn’t, and that’s the best part. I also love meeting and discovering lots of interesting new talent, be it writers, photographers, artists or musicians that I inevitably become obsessed with.
MY FAVOURITE WORK MEMORY IS…
Courtney Love giving me and two colleagues a tour of her (4!) amazing closets, many of which contained stage costumes that I’ve actually seen her perform in. I remember that Gary, one of our old producers, and I held hands quietly amongst all this vintage treasure and just sighed.
WHAT’S THE BEST DECISION YOU’VE EVER MADE?
Moving to Los Angeles. Also, that bagel I ate for lunch.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
Ugh. Girl, don’t buy that belly chain.
IF YOU COULD GIVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE ABOUT GETTING INTO THE INDUSTRY IT WOULD BE…
Check your ego. Listen to people, especially before you talk. Don’t make an important decision before you’ve weighed all the options. Don’t be a hothead. Everything is a learning experience. Your gut should be trusted. Be confident but also informed in your opinions and views. Collaboration is king. Always be the fashion person who orders dessert.
