What We Wear To The Work Christmas Do

This time last year I was preppin’ for the boohoo Christmas party having just moved to Manchester from London. Bringing with me my Southern sensibilities, I was down with the whole day-to-night city routine meaning your office wardrobe had to work for play too – nobody is travelling in and out of central to glam up. I soon learned the north south divide is separated by big hair, beautifully bronzed skin and an impressive collection of going out gear. I let the pressure of ‘fitting in’ escalate into a full on panic and ended up sporting a plunging neckline, an unnecessary amount of sequins, a heinous pair of Spanx and my first ever spray tan. While, I enjoyed playing dress up for the night I now cringe whenever someone suggest we look through last year’s photos. This time I will be going as me, nothing more, nothing less. Sticking with my 90s style I’m opting for clean separates in tone-on-tone grey and silver, finished with some serious statement jewellery.

My Christmas party look is a halter neck berry jumpsuit – loving this colour at the moment. I’ve kept it simple so that I can go all out with accessories… faux fur, glitter and a reindeer design bag because if there’s only one time of year I can get away with novelty items, I’m taking it!

My style flits between carefree bohemian, super casj and ‘eclectic’ to say the least (fur, sequin AND poms poms… you name it, I’ve clashed it). To mark turning quarter of a century this year to my absolute horror, I’ve decided to ‘re-invent’ myself for the Christmas ‘Do, or as quoted “I’ll walk into the room and no-one will recognise me.”

So rather than doing a Britney, I’ve decided to take a more grown-up luxe approach to party dressing with a nod to my favourite decade – the 70s – which is still on trend after a stellar year. I’ll be wearing this sheer blouse over a black bralet to show just about the right amount of flesh in front of colleagues, pairing it with some pants and adding a touch of Christmas sparkle with an embroidered bag. A bonus? This look is pretty much spillage-proof so I won’t be worrying if the night gets out of hand…

Back to Black

Neimen and Marcus once said ‘Women who wear black lead colourful lives’ so my choice would be inspired by those wise words. I’m not ashamed to say I love wearing black – it’s timeless, it’s classic and it goes with everything.

I’d pick this lace playsuit. With it’s subtle sheer detailing, pretty lace trims and delicate straps – it’s the perfect partner for a night of dancing. And keeping with style that never dates, my throw-on would be a simple blazer for the journey home.

As far as accessories go, I’d finish with an intricate lace-up heel and a box clutch big enough to store my Christmas Do essentials – mainly lipstick, because I do allow some colour somewhere!
