This week, we’re crushin’ on Scottish singer-songwriter and all round mega babe, Nina Nesbitt.

After giving us tracks like Peroxide and Chewing Gum, she returns with new single, Somebody Special and we can’t get enough of it.

(Hard to believe she’s only 23, right?) Here’s what went down when we grabbed five…

How did it all start for you?

I started uploading videos to YouTube when I was 15 and built a fan base for a few years, it’s been really gradual for me, touring with other artists, signing to Island records when I was 17, being lucky to receive support from Radio 1 etc,  lots of different things have been helpful in building my career to where it is now!

What does your typical day look like?

Every day is actually so different, which is why I love doing what I do. It’s mostly studio sessions where I’m writing for myself or other people’s projects, doing promo, travelling abroad to play shows, going on tour here etc, there is no day the same. I’m lucky I get to meet lots of people and experience lots of different things which definitely inspires my writing.

Describe your sound in three words…

I can describe it in two… suburban pop

What was your most memorable gig?

Hmmm, I’ve played so many shows over the years, but I’d say most recently playing my November tour last year was really special. It was the first bigger venue tour in a while and the reception from the crowds were so good, to hear people singing the new songs was amazing. It’s made me really excited for my next tour in May.

What did you have on your playlist growing up?

My mum is Swedish, so she always played straight up pop music around the house. She also loved divas like Whitney, Mariah etc. It was definitely very female pop led. Then my Dad is Scottish and loves bands like Roxy Music and I always thought it was boring until I discovered Brian Eno a few years ago and realised he was involved with Roxy Music. So it must have subconsciously been in there all along ha. I think that’s why people find it hard to define what I am. I’m not full on pop but I’m also not alternative, I think I sit somewhere in the middle.

What’s the last song you listened to?

Camila Cabello – Into It. What an amazing pop album. My favourite one in the past year. I think the songwriting is really solid on it.

Who’s the coolest person you’ve met?

Debbie Harry. Most definitely. We didn’t officially ‘meet’ but I went to a Q&A with them and got to ask her a question. She’s definitely a massive idol of mine because she just does her own thing and doesn’t care what other people think. I’m also a big fan of her style.

If you could collab with anyone who would it be and why?

There are so many great artists out there right now. I’d love to write with SZA, Calvin Harris, Max Martin, Kehlani, Post Malone. I also love Troye Sivan’s song. I’d love to write a song with him.

What does 2018 have in store for you?

The album will be coming out! Finally! I’m touring quite a lot of America which has always been a dream of mine. I’m doing some dates of my own and some with Jake Bugg. Then my own UK headline tour which I’m most looking forward to. Festivals. More singles coming out. Videos. It’s going to be a busy year.

What advice would you give anyone wanting to get into music?

I think there are soooo many people putting music out right now that it’s more important than ever to create your own lane. If you’re in your own lane, there’s no competition. It’s really hard to stay focussed when there are so many other artists putting out amazing music but you have to ignore it and focus on yourself. Also I would visuals are more important than ever and you have to really try and create your own brand.

My style is…

I love 90s and French fashion. I also like mixing up the romantic/feminine vs masculine balance. I wouldn’t say i’m straight up girly but i’m not a total tomboy so it’s good to mix it up. I like to change my style every few months otherwise I get bored.

I really can’t live without…

My dog, Prince Timmy. He makes me smile every morning.

At the weekend I can be found…

Sleeping or drinking

My special skills are…

Moving my ears and nostrils. Standing on the tips of my toes. Having the metabolism of a 12 year old (genuinely).

I’m always talking about…

My career and my dog. lol.

The hashtag I always use is…

#somebodyspecial…

A word or phrase I overuse is…

‘literally’
