This week, we’re crushin’ on NYC singer-songwriter, Ariana and the Rose AKA Ariana DiLorenzo.
After starting out as a songwriter, she studied drama at college and got the part in a Broadway musical at just 13 and realised her love of singing.
Since then, she’s gone on to release an EP, Retrograde which features the single, Love You Lately.
See why we love it…
Here’s what went down when we grabbed five…
How did it all start for you?
Oh man, that’s going all the way back! I started as a dancer when I was a kid. I was taking classes in New York City and was scouted to be apart of a dance company. We performed at all of these amazing places like the Tribeca performing Arts Center and things like that. From there, I started doing theatre but eventually got burnt out on auditioning and not getting to create my own work which is what led me to writing my own music. I put a band together in college and have been doing that ever since. It all stems from loving to perform for me.
What does your typical day look like?
Every day is different which is what I love about being an artist and creator. Some days I’m in the studio, if I’m touring then I’m getting to plays shows almost every day and other days I’m sitting at a computer handling more of the business side of things. I’m very fortunate to be able to have no two days that look the same.
Describe your sound in three words…
Dramatic synth catharsis
What was your most memorable gig?
I opened for Foxes as Shepherds Bush Empire a couple years ago. It was my first tour in the UK, I had seen a show there a few months before and thought “I’d just love to play here.” I think I even said that while I was on stage. It felt surreal to go from being an audience member to a performer in that venue. I loved every second of it.
What did you have on your playlist growing up?
Robyn. So really, just Robyn forever. Show Me Love was on repeat over and over again. I think there was some Spice Girls thrown in there as well.
What’s the last song you listened to?
‘Crowded Places’ – Banks
Who’s the coolest person you’ve met?
I just got to meet Cyndi Lauper, which was completely amazing! I was part of her annual Home for the Holidays Christmas show in New York, which had an amazing line up. She is absolutely the coolest and obviously I love her pink hair.
If you could collab with anyone who would it be and why?
There are so many people I’d love to collaborate with! I’ve been dying to work with Survive, which is a band based from Austin, TX. Two of the band members are the guys who created the soundtrack for Stranger Things. I could just sit in a room with them all day and play with tons of different soundscapes, that would be amazing.
What does 2018 have in store for you?
It’s going to be such a busy year, which I’m really excited about and looking forward too. I’ll be putting out a lot of new music. I created a live music party, called light + space, which is a combination of immersive theatre, a live concert and a dance party and we’ll be doing a residency of it for three months in Brooklyn. We’ll be bringing it to London in the spring as well.
What advice would you give anyone wanting to get into music?
Everything takes twice as long as you think it will. The creative process, meeting the right people, everything takes time. Just create music that you absolutely love and then go find people who love and believe in that music as well. I think that is the most important first step.
