It’s true that your friends are the family who you choose. As we all try and navigate adult life, we learn lessons from the break ups, the make ups, our successes, our failures and trying to find our feet as individuals. But it’s the lessons that our friends teach us that are sometimes the most valuable. They’re there for the laughs, the lows, and tend to share some of the weirder and wilder experiences with us. The lessons that my best gals have taught me are invaluable, and here’s why.
1. Wherever you are in life, you’ve got this
It’s easy to compare your life to someone’s glittering social media when you’re having a bad day. It’s easy to feel like you’re in a completely different place to everyone else and that you’re not enough. But as my oldest friend told me last week, everyone experiences their own unique journey, and wherever you are right now is the right place for you.
2. Quality over quantity
Always. Having a small group of friends who have you’re back no matter what is better than being the most popular girl in school. Look at Carrie Bradshaw and Blair Waldorf – who didn’t want to be in their group of mates? Even Regina George had a select (and sometimes questionable) few friends that worshipped her.
3. People change
Unfortunately, sometimes it’s the one’s that you care about the most who hurt you. Whether it’s a drunken spat or a betrayal that ends a friendship, ultimately these experiences teach us lessons and help us grow as people. If you survive a fight with your BFF, your friendship is destined to be and will end up stronger than ever.
4. Laughter is the best medicine
And who better to share that medicine with you than your BFF’s and a bottle of wine, am I right?
5. You’re enough
Forget Mark Darcy’s ‘I love you just the way that you are’ to Bridget Jones. Your friends are the ones who will always tell you how amazing you are, even if you’ve just had a seriously dodgy haircut.
6. Boys are rubbish
You’ll never wake up one morning with your best friends saying they’re leaving and don’t love you anymore. Unfortunately, the latter can be said about some of the boys we’ve all dated in the past. Your girls are going to be the ones who get you through the hardest break ups, whilst also being the bridesmaids at your wedding.
7. Travelling is the best thing ever
Some of my favourite memories with my friends are the ones where we’ve been on a vacay. Whether that’s hitting the beach or exploring a brand new city, travelling with your friends is one of the best experiences that you can ever ask for. They’re even better if there’s copious amounts of wine involved.
8. They Can Fix Anything
A bad day at work, a break up or even when you’re just feeling a bit low. Your friends are the ones who can pick you up no matter what kind of day you’ve had.
And that’s why I love my girls so much.
