Description

Think that your fridge is for discarded old cheeses and stale bottles of milk? While yes would be our regular answer, there's one secret bar in the city championing a new way to look at fridges. 

Hidden behind a Smeg fridge, and accessible thanks to a cheeky request to see 'The Mayor' at the Breakfast Club bar, descend the stairs into a basement filled with fun, food and great drinks. A broody basement of vintage furniture and Canadian whisky lodge meets speakeasy, Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town is an elusive romp away from the bustle of upstairs.

The drinks list is eclectic with a selection of great spirits behind the bar and a small but interesting cocktail list (£7.50). The beer, cider and pale ale are also unique world-wide ones; no standard Corona or Becks here. Prices are reasonable and happily affordable for such a cool place. There is also a small food menu with hot nibbles to keep your stomach satisfied - the baby squid is delicious!

It's the second time attempting to go in, as the first had a really long wait so we decided to skip it. But this time around we got lucky and were seated almost immediately! It's a lovely place, the thrill definitely rests in it's elusive location.

Our first visit to see the mayor and it was great! We often go for brunch to the breakfast club when in London but I thought we'd go for something a bit more special for my partners birthday! Service was fabulous without being overbearing and food and drinks were delicious as usual. We will definitely be visiting the mayor again! Great little hidden bar - although I'm sensing from how busy it was when I first arrived, its not so secret. Interesting cocktails, reasonably priced. It was torrentially raining outside therefore part of the stairwell was flooded, however the staff were very attentive and ensured the safe entry and exit of guests.. Started off my friend's hen do here and was so pleased that the bar staff were happy to play a wedding song for her as she entered the bar. Cocktails were fab and not too expensive. This is my second time here and I found it disappointing. I booked here as we had thought it so cool the first time and it was a special occasion. I identified in the booking that it was my partner's son's 18th birthday. Nothing was done to acknowledge this at all which could be forgiven but when we arrived the bartender was rude and condescending leaving the birthday boy a bit embarrassed. Not what I was expecting. The team at The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town helped to make my husband's 40th birthday a truly unforgettable experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and the unusual cocktails on offer. We could have stayed all night but it was great to find a cool, London venue that didn't require any money upfront or minimum spend...with a party of 10 we certainly racked up a healthy bar bill but without the pressure of feeling like we needed to spend £50 per person!! I'd not been before, I was surprising my wife. There was little build-up or time to take in The Breakfast Club before being led through the fridge, which my wife missed. Downstairs was just magic, the feeling of an old-school speak~easy with delicious cocktails. Some waiters were excellent, helpful and friendly, but two others were a bit rude and condescending. We really enjoyed the experience, although the food was a bit of a let-down, and we only ate one chicken wing each and a mouthful of the waffle. The chilli was delicious, though! In summation, knock-out cocktails in an awesome basement hide-away, sadly let down by mediocre bar snacks and two sultry waiters, made up for with excellent service from everyone else. My daughter and I visited mayor of scaredy cat town on Thursday as part of her 18th birthday celebration. We only stayed for half an hour as we had a very busy schedule but we absolutely loved it. All tha staff were warm and friendly, the atmosphere inside was great and the cocktails, we left knowing we will definitely be back for more next time we visit London. We had to wait a full 45 minutes after being seated before even being looked at by the staff, so were pretty thirsty by that point, despite there only being 15 other people in the place. A group of 11 of us had brunch at The Mayor for my dad's 60th Birthday. The booking was easy - any questions I had were answered promptly via email and on the day, we were running a little late which was not a problem when I called to let them know. The cocktails were fantastic - not like the 'watered down' ones you get in some places - really had a kick! And the food was great - everyone enjoyed their meals and the portions were good value for this London location. The whole theatre of telling the waiter that we're there to see the Mayor and being led through the secret entrance was brilliant and the quirky decor is great. Was a lovely bar, quiet and quirky. We had to wait for around 10 mins for someone to serve us, and the drinks took a fair while to make, we were there for an hour and a half and only just managed to have 2 drinks. Being a "secret bar" is just a gimmick.... but still one I enjoyed experiencing once! Quite small so need to get there early and personally I found the cocktails quite bitter!

im a black cab driver and often get asked about any hidden gems in London.... and this place will DEFINATLY get reccomemded. Only criticism is the staff kept using the fridge to access the upstairs bar. I get why you need this but kinda ruins the illusion of a SECRET entrance . I was in London for the weekend and made a reservation for my last night there, planned my whole day around it and was very excited. When I arrived I was told that the place was closed due to scheduled plumbing repairs. There was a mix-up with our booking, meaning that there wasn't a table for us when we arrived. However, the staff could not have been more apologetic, helpful or accommodating and everything was sorted for us in twenty minutes. Staff are very good and friendly. Everything is quite highly priced but there are limited numbers allowed at one time which is refreshing (and explains why the prices might be slightly higher than usual bars). Cocktails were unique and delicious. The food menu felt a bit uninspiring but we ordered the chilli beef nachoes and they were also very good, and also enough to feed two people, we felt. The atmosphere is cosy with a unique entrance and wallpaper in the toilets that will appease any 80s enthusiast. The bar itself is really nice. The server that took us down from The Breakfast Club on the other hand wasn't so nice. We wanted to take pictures of the fridge entrance for our social media blog and he literally almost shouted at us twice telling us to do it afterwards, and saying people are waiting for us?! There was no-one waiting for us, our table was booked...?! We thought surely the breakfast club and Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town want to be published on social media. Was a fun surprise for my husband. After some mixed reviews I was nervous but we were seated fast as we had a booking, the atmosphere was great and we had wine and a few nibbles. First timer and it was great! From being lead to the secret bar hidden behind a fridge door to the service at the table, everyone was courteous and friendly. Lots of strange cocktails to choose from at a reasonable price and a really nice ambience. Having AC was also a godsend that day as it was a particular hot day. My friends loved the place and didn't even know it existed, and they'd been working across the street from it all year. Perfect for date night. A great atmosphere, tasty cocktails and good service. This is the first secret bar that I have visited and was really impressed (favourite part is definitely walking through a fridge). Would definitely recommend!

I found the secret bar charm was a little lost here, after having to wait 45 mins to get in. The idea is really great, along with the decor, but on arrival the music was very loud, and and seemed almost clubby, and the people inside were screaming so it was hard to have a conversation! This may have been a fault of going to explore on a Thursday though. The staff were lovely however and the drinks very tasty!

Advice for all the lads scoping out date locations: Ideal first date location. Lit in just the right way to create the right intimate atmosphere, Sound levels ideal, loud enough so you can't make out the convos of others, but not so loud as to drown out your +1. ..and who doesn't wanna walk through an unassuming fridge in a diner and come out somewhere cool?!
